Since opening in 2007 the light and airy Willoughby Gallery has developed a varied and annual programme of temporary exhibitions. The programme is curated to provide a showcase for community groups, [schools]; art and craft organizations [Bude Art Society and West Country Embroiderers] and Cornwall and west country-based artists and craft makers.
Among the professional artists who have exhibited are Anthony Frost; Irene Jones; Ashley Hanson; David Eustace; David Brooke; Bryan Sentence; Chris Edwards; Elaine Nash; Sue Read and Henry Israel. As a consequently the work has ranged from abstract to figurative; landscape to representational in oils or acrylic; watercolour to pastels.
The Gallery is building a reputation for quality shows; exhibitions that are inspirational as well as enjoyable, challenging as well as reassuring. Many visitors now repeat visit – visitors who pop into the Gallery on a regular basis. The Willoughby Gallery is developing constantly and preparations for the 2012 programme are already underway.
Besides offering the local community a quality exhibition space the Gallery helps to generate commissions for Cornish and west country-based artists, so is also a means of supporting their livelihoods and artistic development.
